The Riverbank Community Center is the location for our Beginners Fencing Classes, serving students from Riverbank, Modesto, Escalon, Oakdale and nearby towns in California's Central Valley.

These are the beginners classes for all ages, from 6 to 106! Come and learn the basics of the modern sport with professional fencing coaches. You'll get to try fencing in full fencing gear. We use actual competition-quality fencing epees and electronic scoring equipment in every class!

Classes are limited to 16. Two coaches work with students in every class.

Location: Riverbank Community Center, 3600 Santa Fe, Riverbank, CA 95367
The facility is well lit, warm, with high ceiling and the parking lot in the back. The spacious room can easily accomodate 16 fencers for footwork and drills, and 6 fencing strips with plenty of room to mingle and rest between the bouts. Friends, parents, and kids are welcome to stay in and watch the class.

Schedule: Thursdays, 6:15 - 7:15 PM (4 classes per session)

Class fee: $90/session, due before the first class.

Prerequisits: None, besides being healthy enough for vigorous exercise (please note that we have wheelchair fencing program, too).

Equipment: We provide all the fencing equipment; Our students can use club's equipment in classes and trainings for as long as they want. All we ask from you is to come in T-shirt, athletic pants or warmups, covering whole leg (i.e. no shorts), and sneakers. We'll also ask you to wear socks which are long enough that the skin between the sock and the leg is never exposed.

To sign up: You can sign up and pay the fees directly with the coaches, et every class, or, during work hours, with Kerrie Webb of the City of Riverbank's Parks and Recreation, by phone at (209) 863-7149, or e-mail her at kwebb@riverbank.org

Fencing humor

... They score by touching the opponent in the Valid Target Area. The touches are monitored electronically via wires coming out of the fencers' backs, similar to the technology used to control Dan Rather. The fencers also wear face masks, so that they'll have something to whip off in a dramatic fashion when they want to complain to the referee. - Dave Barry, Atlanta, 1996
